Flexit: 50 Years of Transforming Ventilation and Indoor Climate Solutions

This year, Flexit proudly celebrates 50 years of innovation, dedication, and growth in the ventilation and indoor climate industry. From its humble beginnings in Ørje, Norway, to becoming a leader in sustainable solutions across Scandinavia,
the journey of Flexit is as inspiring as it is impactful.

From a family dream to a thriving enterprise...

On August 19, 1974, Finn and Anne-Marie Martinsen founded their family business, originally named Finn Martinsen AS, in modest premises in Ørje. Guided by a vision to improve home ventilation, their journey began with the production of plastic and aluminum air vents. Over the next five decades, that vision transformed into Flexit, a company with 270 employees in Norway and Sweden and a turnover of NOK 800 million.

Innovation and growth: The early years...

In the 1970s, Finn Martinsen recognized a critical need for improved home ventilation. Starting with simple air vents, the company quickly expanded its product line to include flexible aluminum ducts, a groundbreaking product at the time due to its compressed design, which reduced transport costs and simplified installation on construction sites.

Recognizing the growing demand for better indoor air quality, Flexit developed customized exhaust air systems to efficiently remove moisture and pollutants. These systems, tailored to individual homes, were an early example of Flexit's commitment to innovation. As demand grew, so did the team, including salespeople who traversed Norway—sometimes even by ferry due to the lack of a driver’s license—to reach customers and grow the business.

Adapting to energy demands and expanding horizons...

By the 1990s, environmental awareness and new energy regulations led to the development of ventilation units with heat recovery—a game-changer for energy efficiency. These systems became industry standards, balancing ventilation and heat recovery to meet the needs of the time.

After the passing of founder Finn Martinsen in 1994, his sons Pål and Alf took the helm, expanding Flexit's market presence beyond Norway into Sweden, Finland, and other European countries. The company's adaptability and forward-thinking approach helped it weather economic challenges, including the late 1990s financial crisis.

Advancing technology: From air vents to smart indoor climate systems...

Flexit's evolution over the past 50 years is a testament to its innovative spirit. From simple air vents to the EcoNordic indoor climate heat pump, the company has continually pushed boundaries. The EcoNordic system combines balanced ventilation with air-to-water heat pump technology, offering a comprehensive solution for heating, hot water, and ventilation.

In parallel, Flexit has embraced digital transformation, creating products and services that align with the green shift in the construction industry. By providing accessible product data and streamlining processes, Flexit contributes to a more sustainable future.

Commitment to sustainability and health...

As climate change drives the need for greener solutions, Flexit remains at the forefront, developing products that are both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. By improving indoor air quality, Flexit enhances health and well-being, making its solutions an essential part of modern living.

Family legacy of innovation and dedication...

Today, Flexit remains a family-owned business, with Pål Martinsen’s children continuing Finn’s legacy. The company's success is built on the dedication of its 270 employees, a mix of seasoned professionals and new talent who bring fresh ideas and energy. Flexit’s core values—trustworthy, energetic, innovative, and considerate—are reflected in every aspect of its operations.

Looking to the Future...

As Flexit celebrates its 50th anniversary, it’s a moment to honor the past while looking forward to the future. The company extends heartfelt thanks to its employees, owners, and customers for their unwavering support and collaboration.

This milestone is more than just a celebration of what has been achieved; it’s a springboard for new innovations, opportunities, and a continued commitment to creating a better indoor climate for generations to come.
